Methodology & sources
Sources
Finance Atlas draws from two public federal datasets. Each figure is stamped with its own source and as-of date; the two dates are never collapsed into one.
- FDIC BankFind — the FDIC's public database of all FDIC-insured banks, savings banks, and
savings institutions (historical and active). Source id
src:fdic:bankfind:2026. Data as of 2026. Verify any institution at banks.data.fdic.gov. - FFIEC HMDA (Home Mortgage Disclosure Act) — the public mortgage application dataset published
by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council / CFPB. Source id
src:ffiec:hmda:2024. Data year 2024. Browse at ffiec.cfpb.gov/data-browser.
What we show
- FDIC lender counts — total FDIC-insured institutions (historical) and currently active count, by state. Charter class distribution using FDIC's official class codes (N, NM, SM, SB, SL, SI, etc.).
- HMDA denial rates — overall mortgage application denial rate per state (2024), plus reported rates for White and Black applicants where applicant race was reported in HMDA.
- HMDA origination volume — originated loan count, total volume, and average loan size.
What is not in the data
- No per-bank pages. Finance Atlas is aggregate/geography only. There are no pages for individual named banks.
- HMDA denial rates are not findings of discrimination. HMDA captures reported applicant race (where provided) and all denial reasons together. The data do not capture credit score, DTI, LTV, or other underwriting factors. A higher denial rate for one group does not establish why rates differ.
- No financial advice. Finance Atlas does not recommend lenders, rank institutions, or advise on mortgage choices.
What this is not
Finance Atlas is a reference catalog. It informs and compares provenanced public facts and routes you to authoritative sources to act:
- Verify a lender: banks.data.fdic.gov
- File a mortgage complaint: consumerfinance.gov/complaint
- Find a HUD-approved counselor: hud.gov/findacounselor
Current coverage: 27,836 FDIC-insured institutions across 56 states and territories. FDIC data exported June 20, 2026.
